FedEx Ground station representatives will conduct mock roadside inspections by asking questions regarding HOS and ELDs at gate checks in response to the FedEx Ground CSA HOS score being over threshold. These questions are asked by law enforcement during roadside inspections and CMV drivers are obligated under the DOT to be able to respond. It is critical that all TSP personnel can answer the following:
- Can you show an officer eight days’ worth of blank logs?
- Can you provide the ELD user’s manual for your ELD?
- This can be provided in paper form or electronic form from the ELD display.
- On the ELD, press the question mark on the home page or navigate to it on the main screen
- Can you provide the ELD instruction sheet (aka cab card) for transferring logs to law enforcement?
- This can be provided in paper form or electronic form from the ELD display.
- Can you transfer logs to an officer during a roadside inspection?
- Can you navigate to the ELD’s ‘Inspection mode’ to transfer logs?
- The ELD has an ‘Inspection mode’ tab to transfer logs.
- Can you you present the ELD display at the window to an officer?
- The screen must be visible from a reasonable distance outside the window.
- The ELD would be removed from its cradle and any cords/cable extended so that the ELD can be held at the window.
TSPs are encouraged to share Trucksafe Consulting, LLC’s 15-minute video ‘Understanding Common ELD Functionally’ with their driving personnel. It’s available on YouTube and within their website’s video library. The video addresses some of the most common ELD-related violations the FedEx Ground operating authority has faced during roadside inspections.
