HOS and Driver Fitness CSA scores at threshold, expect more roadside inspections

Topics: Safety

The Inspection Selection System (ISS) status for any branded FedEx Ground vehicle is now “Inspect.” This means law enforcement will be targeting FedEx Ground-branded vehicles for more frequent roadside inspections. The ISS status changed to “inspect” because the Hours of Service Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) score has reached intervention threshold and the Driver Fitness score also exceeds intervention threshold.

When a motor carrier reaches intervention threshold, it is subject to various forms of intervention by the DOT including increased inspections and a DOT audit. “CSA affects drivers because their safety performance and compliance impact their safety records and, while working for a carrier, will impact their carrier’s safety record,” according to the FMCSA’s CSA Fact Sheet.

FedEx Ground has experienced an uptick in HOS electronic logging device (ELD) violations. These seem to stem from lack of education on ELD use and false logs.

Service providers can help improve HOS compliance by watching Trucksafe Consulting’s 15-minute video ‘Understanding Common ELD Functionally’ on YouTube or within their website’s video library. The video addresses some of the most common ELD-related violations the FedEx Ground operating authority has faced during roadside inspections.

Continuous ELD education will help reduce violations and improve the HOS CSA score.
